Herbert L. Allen (1925 - 2012) | Visit Guest Book

Herbert L. Allen passed away at the age of 87 on May 14, 2012. Herb was born in Longview, Washington to Herbert and Thelma Allen on April 30, 1925, and was the second of three children. His family lived many places in Oregon before settling in Shasta County in 1939 where Herb attended Shasta High School.

Herb proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 - 1946. He was a seaman on a destroyer, the USS Brough. He experienced Normandy during the worst U.S. invasion which was the largest air, land and sea operation in history.

Upon returning home to Redding, Herb joined his father's construction company as a heavy equipment operator of cranes and dump trucks. They worked on various construction jobs throughout northern California including Shasta and Keswick Dams. After his father Herb, Sr. retired, Herb Jr. had his own trucking business until retiring in 1996. Herb (best known as Herbie to family and friends) enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, NASCAR and playing cards. Many hours were spent cheering on the SF Giants and 49ers. Favorite memories were made traveling with family and friends in the RV and attending family gatherings.

He will be deeply missed for his spontaneous sense of humor and wit. His joyful spirit was accented by his warm smile and bright blue eyes. Herb leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret, their two daughters, Linda Delles (Mike) of Redding and Leslie Hufford (Ken) of Fort Rock, OR; four grandchildren Kody and Jesse Hufford of Oregon, Nicole Foote-Johanson and Brandon Foote of Redding; nine great-grandchildren, yourger sister, Dolores Gallagher of Redding and several nieces and nephews. His older sister, Fay Bohren, preceded him in death in 2011.

Services will be held at McDonald's Chapel in Redding on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation is available on Thursday, May 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Redding Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Margaret and Family and Dolores and Family,
We are sad to say goodbye to Herbie---On the other hand we have many fond memories of him, especially of when I (Marlene) lived in Redding for a year when I was 6 years old---going to the "Races". Herbie always had a few fun words for me and always seemed to be in such a joyful mood----Will always remember him. Margaret and family, are to be commended so much for the wonderful care you all gave him. We love you all!

Sad for your loss, but happy for such rich memories these many decades. Good to know he was a Giant Baseball fan. There are many where he is; Gene Dawson and Irene Avey Granger to name two.
