James was born to Robert and Betty Washington. He was the second of ten children. His birthplace was Ripley, Tennessee.
The Washington Family moved to Muncie, Indiana when Jim was six years old, so the children wouldn’t have to go to a one room school house. Jim and his siblings attended Longfellow Elementary School, and then Jim attended McKinley Jr. High.
Jim joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, in Muncie, Indiana. Jim and two of his brothers, Bill and Lemmie, and a friend, Robert Darden, The four teenagers formed a gospel quartet. They broadcast every morning before school for 15 minutes, on radio station WLBC.
In Jr High School, Jim played football, continued in High school until his 11 grade. He worked full time during his senior year, He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1951.
James joined the U.S.A.F. on February 14, 1952. He had five overseas Tours of duty and five state side. Tacoma, Washington was his last assignment. He retired January 1, 1974.
James and Lessie met in September of 1961. Together they raised five children: James E., Dyvonne, Kim, Leon and Jeanette.
James H. Washington was ordained as a minister in the C.M.E. Church in August 1996. He was pastor of Henry Memorial C.M.E. Church in Redding, He retired in 2006. In 2009 James and his family joined St. Marks M.B.C.
Proceeded in death: Parents, Robert and Betty Washington; Brothers, Willie Earest “Bill”, Robert Jr. “Bob”, Roy, Lemmie; Sisters, Nettie and Cozzette.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His loving wife Lessie; Sons: Rev. James E. (Michele) of Springboro, Ohio, Leon (Melinda) of Sacramento, California; Daughters: Dyvonne of Palo Cedro, California, Kim of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Jeanette of Sacramento, California. Granddaughters: Alexis, Kaneisha, Faith and Ella. Grandson: Joshua, Brother: Tray Washington of Muncie, Indiana, Sisters, Dorothy Strickland (Wayman) of San Francisco, California, Kay Smith (Irving) of Fisher, Indiana, Sister-In-Law, Juanita Washington of San Francisco. Nieces: Darlene, Karen, Courtney, Christy, Sue, Myisa and Bobbi Lynn. Nephews: Wayman (Michele), Stephen (Shayla), Aunt; Genevieve Bradford of Ripley, Tennessee. Uncle, Thomas Lee Washington of Hennings, TN.
