Margaret was born on July 15, 1920 in Potter Valley, California to Olga Richter and Elmer Spotswood.
She graduated from Potter Valley High School and went to Santa Rosa Junior College for two years.
Margaret married Vernon Leard in 1939 and had 3 children. Together they built a life based on mutual
respect, hard work, and lots of fun with family and friends. Our mom was an active member of the Potter
Valley Methodist Church, Potter Valley Grange, and along with her husband were very active with Eastern
Star serving together as Worthy Matron and Patron.
Margaret was employed by the Mendocino County Treasurer's office and retired from Redwood Valley
Credit Union in Ukiah, California.
One of the most lovable characteristics that mom portrayed was her love for her San Francisco Giants
baseball team. Calling her during a game was risky! Before the season began, she was often seen filling
out by ruler and pencil, score sheets; one for each team. She kept the stats for each player! Right up until
the end. We would tell her who's pitching; she'd whisper, "he's a good one"...:)
Mom had many hobbies over the years. She always said gardening was her therapy, knitting and crochet
work provided many a gift, bridge and pinochle groups kept life busy. Moving into Oakdale Assisted Living
gave her time to enjoy bingo, making fast friends in the process. Her family and friends will always remember
her as a caring listener and a loving spirit; a fun mom and friend. Her life story was featured in the March
issue of the Enjoy magazine; they wanted an article on the elderly...that tickled her!
Margaret is survived by her children: Joanne Padilla (Lorenzo) of Redding, CA; Bill Leard (Sherri) of Redding,
CA; and Judi Norby (Jon) of North Fork, CA. Her 7 grandchildren: Lon Padilla; Lori Padilla (John Callaghan);
Greg (Liza); Julie Thornton (Mark); granddaughter-in-law Cher Norby (Jeremy Norby); Kaitlin Leard; and Scott Riley.
6 great grandchildren; Kolby Thornton; Remington and Rowan Riley; Nik, Trent, and Jake Norby.
She is preceded in death by her husband Vernon Leard, her son-in-law Lorenzo Padilla, and her grandson Jeremy Norby.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. The family would like to thank the nurses, assistants, and
chaplains of Mercy Hospice and the staff, caregivers, and residents of Oakdale Heights Assisted Living for the loving
care and friendship given our mom, Margaret Leard.
If anyone wishes to donate; Mom supported the American Cancer Society, Parkinson Foundation, Wounded Warrior
Project, Paralyzed Veterans of America. She also loved her flowers!
