To me, Russell was a kind and mellow guy who was always there for you. Whenever we visited, whether the early days in Clovis or the later years in Reding as well as the cousin get-togethers in Lakeport and Napa, we always enjoyed ourselves as Russell, you too, made us feel welcome and accepted. Tim was looking forward to getting to know Russell better but, unfortunately, Russell had that devastating stroke. We've read the wonderful stories your family have written about Russell. I guess I waited until now because of how hard it is to accept that you have passed, Grandpa. There is so much more I want to talk to you about, so much more to learn from you, so much more to do with you. But I am now starting to realize that you already taught me all I need to know if I just revisit my memories of you.

Six year old me riding the bus home from my very first day of first grade, wondering why I couldn't have just gotten picked up since it was the first day, and then seeing you standing at the bus stop waiting for me. That was so much better than being picked up, and I still strongly remember the elation I felt and the speed my mouth blabbed to you about my first day as we walked the about a hundred feet to my house. 
You and Grandma suddenly showing up to watch us kids when my mom was ready to birth Maryssa. You helped us stay calm and made it a fun experience while waiting for our new sister.
Seeing you in the crowd at nearly every school event I or my siblings had, always put a huge smile on my face, and let me know it was going to be a great day.
Sleeping in a sleeping bag in your living room, and waking up to the smell of bacon, knowing that once again I didn't manage to wake up before Grandpa.

So many great memories of you, your kindness, and your warm smile. Memories that will never leave me, memories that will make me a better father and grandfather as I grow up, memories that I will always cherish as some of those closest to my heart.

For me you set the golden standard of "Grandpa," and as a kid I could never understand when other kids told me about their grandpas and they weren't as amazing as you. I thought all grandpas were just by default fantastic. I started to realize that you were very special, very kind and loving, very attentive, and always around when I wanted you around.

I remember as a kid arguing which was better, Disneyland or Grandma and Grandpa's house. And your house almost always won, even up until the last few years. Your and Grandma's happiness and love infused that house which such positivity that every day there was like a day in a fairytale, and I never could quite describe it to my friends because of how magical it was and how fully I enjoyed it.

And now I have become a father and I only wish you could have met my lovely future wife Cassie so she could understand what it truly means to be a Scott and so you could know how well we are going to raise your great grandson to proudly carry on the Scott name. I only hope that I can be half the man and, in the future, half the grandfather I knew you to be. Seeing my dad holding my child, I know that he will be just as amazing a grandfather to Jayden as you were to me. So thank you so much for making my childhood so magical and so full of great memories, and thank you for being the wonderful person you are and passing that on to my father and on to me and on to your great grandson. 

I love you Grandpa and I will treasure every moment I had with you.

OK! so today is your birthday and up until now I have not been able to post this. I wrote it right after you went into the place of peace. Your son, whom chose to love me forever, is so wise and let me know for my own peace I need to just post it.  I talk to you most nights and you are giving me and our family strength.  So here is what I was trying to say way back when you were allowed to be peaceful. I decided not to reword anything, you always told me I was too hard on myself. I believe we taught each other more than we actually realized.  So, thank you, you know I miss you.  

On another note which I know you have heard me say several times.
I wish like anything in the entire world that I (we all) could have seen you holding and loving your great-grandson Jayden, our angelic grandson.  He has your spirit your compassion and a smile that will melt your heart.  I always thought you had that kind of smile.  Brad is a dad that obviously learned a lot from his grandpa, always take care and love the baby.  He is his dad's kid too.  Calm and Kind and protective.  Anyway, Russel or as I liked to call you Dad.  The following is what I originally was going to say and I wish I would have posted, however as your son would say we do the best we can and it is never too late and as your wife says love conquers all.  So we are all going to be ok and we should not be concerned about the words we say when they are full of love and help others in their daily lives and I believe you did that, and like Wayne, more than you understood.  So unedited this was what I wrote way back when....thanks for everything!

Words cannot describe your unconditional love. You taught me so much more than you ever realized.  I am a better person, a better mom and a better wife to your son because of your love, patience and wisdom.  

I remember how much you loved to watch the grandkids play, you would sit or stand for hours just watching and laughing, so many of my favorite pictures are of you standing near the kids while they are playing and you are smiling that smile that shows complete contentment and love.  You read to them, you cooked for them, you kept them safe, you taught them so much.  They would all get so excited about waking up to see Grandpa.  They cherished every moment.  The stories on the grandpa subject are boundless.

I remember when the roof blew off our home in Redding, I called you panicked (as I did on several other occasions also) because rain was all over our kitchen and Wayne was out of town.  Grandma took the kids to your home to play and you stopped at the hardware store and bought the biggest tarps you could find, then you stood at the top of the ladder making sure I was safe while we tacked the tarps down.  I think we put more holes in the roof by nailing the tarps than the damage the storm did, but at least we no longer had a puddle in the kitchen.

It seems like you and grandma made it to every school event the kids had, they so looked forward to any time with you and you made sure throughout the years that you gave them as much of your time as possible.

I remember just before you retired to play with your grandkids.  I was pregnant with Bradley, Sherrianna was just one and Wes was almost three, you would stop by the house on your way home from work just to see your grandchildren.  So many memories.


My stories could go on, but I know as we tell them to each other and at family gatherings, you will be listening and providing us with the strength we all need to continue remembering all the fun and all your love.

I feel that people appreciated you and loved you more than you believed.  It seemed that every person you came in contact with in life enjoyed you.  Since your passing I have received several texts from your relatives talking about how you positively affected their lives.

What a blessing to have loved so deeply and given so much to all those that you treasured.   Your memory will be eternal, your love lives on. I know you know how much I loved you.  And thank you for loving us all so unconditionally...
