Robert Louie Bernelle
February 27, 1925 – March 28, 2019
Robert Louie Bernelle born Feb 27, 1925 in Quachita Parish, Monroe, Louisiana to Emile Bernelle from Georgia and Elizabeth Cullen of Edenborough, Scotland. Bob married Lillian Yocum and has one son Robert Edgar Bernelle in New Jersey. Married Virginia Drake of Sacramento and adopted her children Donald Bernelle who was killed in Viet Nam and Kathy Bernelle who is now deceased. Married Edith Rosellen Brown and helped raise her son Bruse. Married Jaimie Turner now divorced. Bob had two sisters Alyce and LaVerne Bernelle and is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Bob joined the Navy Oct 1942 until Nov 1945 and was ranked WT I/C in World War II. Bob loved to reminisce about his service in the North Atlantic on a Sea Plane Tender that was torpedoed off Iceland in 1943 and serving on a Landing Ship (LST 1102) in the Pacific, he participated in the invasion of the Philippines, Okinawa and mop up operations of other Pacific Islands. While he did not say much about getting into trouble and spending time in the Brig, he did do solitaire confinement, bread and water with a full ration on the third day.
Bob was able to get his alcoholism under control thru the grace of GOD, Alcoholics Anonymous and his wife Rose. If you knew Bob he could take your inventory but sometime had trouble taking his own. He was active in AA, 12 step work, opening the Phoenix House for Special programs then becoming the Shasta Sierra Work Furlough program with the Dept. of Corrections for early release CDC inmates from 1970 to 2012. Bob worked at Cheney Grant Lumber in Pondosa; Diamond Internationals boiler room in Red Bluff, Bob was active in the initial operation of the Ombudsman program in Northern Ca. helping the elderly. Bob was active in the Redding Rodeo Associations Sponsor committee. Buckeye Grange, VFW, American Legion and donated to multiple charities.
Robert retired in 2012 staying active in the community until his death March 28, 2019.
