Don’t know if anyone will ever check this or see this but my grandma had a old old old looking bible she died november 18th 2020  im 13 but i’ve seen the bible like my whole life on her shelf and stuff but i looked threw her old bible today and saw a card with sammy’s name on it i also found lots of pages with writings and notes that had his name and what seem to be others he new, i also saw lots of old newspapers and lots of stamped plant inside that were smashed in, i don’t know if my nana did that but i thought i’d search this guy up, i found it very cool! Samuel G. was one of the great ones from the Greatest Generation.  He worked hard through the Depression, formed 'Sammy Newcom and His Swing Band' after a year at Iowa State and moved on to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa where he met my mother, Grethel Joy Conklin.  Shortly after marriage, June 1, 1941, he entered the Army and supported the 101st Airborne supervising a field artillery unit.  He earned 4 battle stars and came home safe.  He had a fun job as Band Director, Griswold High School, and he and Grethel had 3 children. After earning a M.S. from the University of Nebraska he moved to Omaha and the Douglas County Health Department.  After earning a M.P.H. from the University of California (Berkeley) the family decided to stay in Berkeley and Sam joined the faculty at Berkeley High School, teaching Mathematics.  He retired from Berkeley in 1980 and moved to Redding, CA to assist his son, George Emerson, in the development of rental property including houses, duplexes, and a motel.  Sam continued to play his accordion well into his 90's and was always a fan of the Lawrence Welk orchestra that he had played with in Iowa.  He traveled to Los Angeles to see the orchestra perform and to New Orleans to meet the clarinet player, Pete Fountain.  He and Grethel traveled the world, including China and Russia.  Following their daughter, Joy Louise's disabling auto-accident, they provided care and support for her for the rest of their lives.  Sam and Grethel worked continuously to support the United Methodist Church in Redding as they had supporting the Griswold Methodist Church, Ames Avenue Methodist in Omaha and Epworth Methodist in Berkeley.  Grethel, 88, died from Ovarian Cancer, April 7, 2009.  Sam, 98, died from Congestive Heart Failure and Reflux Esophagitis with Aspiration, March 1, 2016.

Some called you Sam, some called you Dad, some called you Gramps, even Great Grandpa, but I called you Pop - and Pop, I couldn't have had a greater father-in-law than you. You led a long, good life - raised three children with your wonderful wife - knew good times and knew strife - and always had that wonderful smile - I'm so glad to have been a part of your life for a while.
