
Sheldon Wayne Lewis, passed away peacefully in Redding, CA on October 17, 2024, just one day after celebrating his 104th birthday. Born on October 16, 1920, Sheldon lived a long, rich life filled with dedication, adventure, and service.
A proud Navy veteran, Sheldon served his country aboard the USS Gunnel submarine in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, in 1947, he settled as a homesteader in Tulelake, establishing roots that would grow into a legacy. He worked with the County Road Department, later branching into self-employment as a skilled dragline operator. Known for his dedication to community, he played a vital role in building the Newell Baptist Church and contributed to the planning of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair horse show and was a horse club leader.
A true adventurer, he participated in the historic Great American Horse Race of 1976, trekking across the U.S. from New York to Sacramento. His passion for horses and competition was also evident in his numerous Levi Ride & Tie events.
Sheldon was a lifetime member of the VFW, holding his service close to his heart.
He is survived by his beloved daughter Linda, grandchildren Russell, Shele, Niki (Will), Kacy, Tera (Matt), Kacee and AJ (Kaillee), great-grandchildren Tyler, Ryan (Jessie), Tara, Sadie, Fawkes and Lassen. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, daughter Carol, son Robert and grandson Rodney.
Linda would like to share that, despite any hardships he faced, her dad always maintained a positive outlook and never complained.
Sheldon will be remembered for his pioneering spirit, unwavering dedication, and the love he shared with his family and friends.

A brief Military Honors service will be held at the Malin Cemetery 2432 4th St Malin, OR on November 9th at 1:00 pm with a Memorial service for friends and family immediately following at the Malin Community Hall 2307 Front Street Malin, OR. Arrangements have been entrusted to O’Hair & Ward Funeral Chapel.
