Obituary of Barbara Hilliard Redford
Barbara Hilliard Redford, of Varina, died on October 25, 2021, in her home surrounded by her loving family and husband. Barbara was born in Richmond, VA on September 24, 1936 and a graduate of Highland Springs High School class of 1955. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles H. Hilliard and Anne Louise Rowe Hilliard of Richmond; her stepmother Helene Hilliard for whom she cared for years; and her only sibling, her beloved sister, Joyce Hilliard Roach of Chesterfield. Barbara dedicated 37 years to the Henrico County Public School system as a school bus driver and lunchroom monitor. She not only drove children to and from school, but she drove teams to many sporting events, bands to parades and competitions, and classes on the always popular field trips. She was team mother for many of her children’s athletic teams and was a mainstay at the athletic fields and stadiums during their events. Barbara supported her grandchildren in their endeavors with the same enthusiasm and dedication. During her years with Henrico County, Barbara worked summers and weekends; often the residents of Varina would see her at the FasMart on New Market Road cooking yummy country store comfort food, or (going WAY back) at the check-out at the Home Shop on Williamsburg Road. After retiring from Henrico County Barbara worked part-time for Hawthorne Cleaners in Varina where she enjoyed serving many of the students (and their children) she had driven on her school bus or monitored in the lunchroom at Varina Elementary School. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Calvin Redford, and four children; James Allen Redford of Henrico, Ronald Earl Redford (Mary) of Providence Forge, Teresa Redford Norton (Jeff) of Tappahannock, and Wanda Redford Hancock (Dennis) of Providence Forge. Barbara (or Meemaw) is also survived by her 9 grandchildren: Sarah Redford Crocker, Rachael Redford, Niki Hancock Dunkum (Mitch), C.J. Hancock (Kamryn), Cali Hancock, Jonathan Ayres (Ryane), Meghan Redford Holmes (Jarrett), Cameron Redford (Karlee), and Stephen Redford; and 8 great grandchildren. Viewing will be Monday, November 1, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23231. Funeral service will be held 12:00 noon Tuesday, November 2, in the Chapel at Nelsen Funeral Home followed by interment at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
