Obituary of Betty Britton Maier
Betty Britton Maier, 75, of Providence Forge, VA., passed away peacefully in her home on February 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Ray and Ada Vernelle Britton, Sr.; sister, Gaynelle R. Doustout; Brother, Edgar R. Britton, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence J. Maier, Jr.; son, Dennis C. Ford, Jr. (Kristina); daughter, Angela Ford Epps; two grandchildren, Tyler and Alyssa Epps; brother, Kenneth R. Britton (Linda); brother in law, Gilbert Doustout, Jr.; niece, Jennifer D. Nolte; and several nieces and nephews. Betty grew up in Varina where she graduated from Varina High School. She had two children from a previous marriage. A son, Dennis Ford, Jr. and Angela Ford Epps. Angie and Todd gave her two grandchildren, Tyler and Alyssa whom “Nanny Birdie” loved and adored. Betty gained employment at Hawthorne Cleaners where she met Larry dropping off his weekly cleaning of police uniforms. They became great friends and were together for 35 years, 25 of those being married. Betty left Hawthorne Cleaners and acquired a job at St. Mary’s Hospital where she worked for 15 years meeting her dear friend Candy Oliver. She then left the hospital to work for Tuckahoe Orthopedics until she retired after 13 years. Betty and Larry loved to travel. They went on cruises and trips to Europe. She loved their yearly visit to Nags Head to enjoy the sand and sun. They made frequent trips to Burkeville, VA. To visit Larry’s cousin Gloria Dooley. She was an avid decorator and gardener. She enjoyed antiquing and thrifting to find the perfect piece for their beautiful home. She loved to be in the yard planting her flowers and relaxing by her pond with geese. She was mama to her beloved fur babies Mitzi and Gigi. After Mitzi’s passing, they found Gigi to love and cuddle. She was a great comfort staying by her side in her last days. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 pm, Wednesday, February 22 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4560 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA. 23231. A graveside will be held 11 am, Thursday, February 23 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family would like to thank Tammy Spence for her excellent care and compassion and Hospice Care for comforting care in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimers Association.
