MITCHELL, Ernest Gilbert Sr., 82, of Sandston, made his final trip home to be with our Heavenly Father on June 13, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Lucy Adkins Mitchell; brothers, Robert, John Lee, Mason Mitchell; and son, Clyde Mitchell. Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby Edwards Mitchell; children, Ernie (Gail) Mitchell Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Pat (Jimmy) Walthall, Jeff (Sheila) Mitchell, Cathy Crigger; grandchildren, Jamey, Jennifer, Carrie, Angela, Adam, Steven, Stacey, Justin; great-grandchildren, Tami, Nicholas, Ava, Emma, Ryan and William. He was a retired U.S. Army military officer for 34 years at 56th Station Hospital as a Command Sergeant Major. Ernest enjoyed camping, gardening and spending time with his family and friends most of all. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond. Burial will be private.
