She was born on June 19, 1930 in Hinton, WV to the late Samuel and Minnie Harris. Fern graduated from Princeton High School (WV) and worked for years at Maidenform. She married Marion “Bud” Burnett, on July 18, 1959 and relocated to the Sandston area in 1970. She joined Poplar Springs Baptist Church where she was a member for over 30 years.
Fern enjoyed her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker and took great pride in her family and home. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed doing yardwork well into her 80s.
In her free time, Fern volunteered at her church and enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her grandkids. She was so proud of them and took every opportunity to spoil them. She will be remembered as a sweet and generous lady by all that knew her.
In addition to her parents, Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Marion “Bud” Burnett; and siblings, Frank Harris, Fred Harris, Ruth Duncan, Ruby Knouff, Ethel Miles, and Jewel Clarke.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lisa Messner (Tom); grandchildren, Adam, Jacob; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 21, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 5270 Charles City Rd., Richmond, Va. 23231, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
A private interment will be held in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
