Spike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and later built a long career as a maintenance machinist with Nabisco, from which he retired. He was also a member of Fort Lee Baptist Church.
Spike was happiest when he had something to work on. Whether he was working on a car, rebuilding something, or simply tinkering with a project, he enjoyed working with his hands and figuring things out. He wasn’t someone who needed anything fancy—a project to keep him busy, a cold beer, and time spent around the people he cared about were often enough. Those simple moments are among the memories his family will carry with them.
Spike predeceased his beloved wife, Marilyn Hill, and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martha Hill.
He is survived by his daughters, Wendy Terwilliger (Andrew) and Tammy Barrett (David); stepdaughter, Kathy Jewell (Chris); grandchildren, Austin Sturtz (Chelsea), Ryan Philbates, Logan Terwilliger, Jason Douglass (Addison) and Courtney Mosley (Chris); great-grandchildren, Aria Sturtz, Sebastian Douglass and Olivia Barrett; and his sisters, Maryellen Hresan (Carl) and Jewel Phillips (Randy).
Spike will be remembered for the life he built, the family he loved, and the many years he devoted to those around him. His memory will live on through his family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA. 23231 where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Hollywood Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
