Born on April 29, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, Butch lived a life marked by dedication, strength, and heart. He served with pride in the United States Air Force, retiring with distinction as a Senior Master Sergeant.
A proud and devoted veteran, he found deep purpose and lifelong brotherhood through his membership at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8529 in Sandston, Virginia. It was more than an organization to him—it was a second family, a place where shared service turned into lasting friendships, and where he continued to serve with honor long after hanging up his uniform.
Butch was a lifelong sports enthusiast who found joy in following many teams over the years, though none captured his loyalty quite like the University of Virginia. He was a devoted UVA fan, always proud to support them through every win and loss. But his heart never left his roots—his loyalty to the St. Louis Cardinals ran especially deep. Growing up in St. Louis, baseball was more than just a game; it was part of who he was. In addition to his love for watching sports, Butch also enjoyed playing golf. Time on the course was something he valued—not just for the game itself, but for the peaceful moments, the fresh air, and the chance to enjoy the company of friends and family.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, JoAnn "Jojo" Gazzaway; his parents, Gordon and Alice Gazzaway; and his sister, Rosemary Piles (Richard).
He is survived by his daughter, Tess Ferguson (Steven); his son, Donnie Poulson; his grandson, Tyler Ferguson (Kelsey); granddaughters, Charity and Kaylen Poulson; his siblings, Georgia White, Debra Parr, and Donald Gazzaway (Winnie); and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Butch was the kind of man whose presence made you feel grounded—steady, safe, and deeply loved. He gave generously of himself, asked for little in return, and built a life rooted in loyalty, laughter, and quiet strength. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his love will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Though our hearts ache, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit surrounds us still—in the lives he shaped, and especially in the family he adored.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Butch's honor to VFW Post 8529, Sandston, VA.
