October 22, 1955 – August 24, 2024
Gladys Kuhn, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at age 68 on Saturday, August 24th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 22nd, 1955, in Manhattan, New York to Colombian immigrants Ricardo and Betty Vela; Gladys spent her early years in New York City. After completing her education, she proudly served in the United States Army where she met the love of her life, David Kuhn. The two were married on November 25th, 1978, in West Point, New York. Later that year they welcomed a son, Kenneth Shaun Kuhn, in June 1979.
Following their military service, Gladys and David settled in Mt. Storm, West Virginia, where the family grew with the birth of their daughter, Amanda Michelle Kuhn (now Amanda Wells), in August of 1987. During their time in Mt. Storm, Gladys began a long and dedicated career with Dominion Energy, spanning 35 years until her well-deserved retirement.
The family later relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where they have resided ever since. Gladys's life was filled with the joys of family, as she doted on her four grandchildren: Ruby Kuhn, Ben Kuhn (children of Shaun and wife Maya Kuhn), Emma Mae Wells, and Adeline Wells (children of Amanda and husband Matt Wells). Her love for her grandchildren was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Gladys was known for her love of shopping, her signature color pink, and her deep faith; which she nurtured through her active involvement in church and her dedication to studying and discussing the Christian faith. Her strength, intelligence, curiosity, determination, and unwavering love made her a pillar of strength for her family and all who knew her.
A viewing will be held on Friday, August 30th, at 6-8pm at Nelsen Funeral Home; 4650 S Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23231. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, August 31st, at 11:00am at Highland Springs Church of Christ; 416 S. Kalmia Avenue, Highland Springs, VA. Friends and family are invited to wear pink in honor of her life long love of the color.
Gladys will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, faith, and dedication will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
