Many years have passed since Horace and I worked together on the BFI Landfill on Charles City Road, but even now I remember him fondly.  It must have been about 1983 or so when I was hired on as an equipment operator, and without one ounce of experience.  Horace, being my boss, was saddled with the task of deciding whether I had what it took to join the team, and since I was in need of intense, constant supervision and training,  he deligated the task to one of the senior operators - but Horace was always watching from a distance.  One day, about 2 weeks into my training,  I was required to make a difficult and , frankly, frightening maneuver straight down into a deep pit with my scraper pan....I hesitated, looked up and from across the pit I saw Horace, standing there with his arms crossed over his chest,  just like Mr. Clean,  and steadily watching me.  I was scared to death, but there's the Boss - watching me, just waiting for me to jack up this 250k piece of equipment.  Later, at quitting time, Horace came over to me and said, "That was a good job back there, for a minute I didn't think you were gonna do it,  go over the edge like that.  But I'm sure glad you did because I had a $10.00 bet that you would!"   He clapped me on the shoulder and walked away. From that moment forward I could truly appreciate his sense of humor, and his genuine interest in my success at the landfill.  I thank him for his patience, his influence, and his ability to let the small stuff go.  After all these years,  Horace has left clear and mostly humorous memories in my mind, even across the many miles.

I remember the first time I met Horace after I had rode out King & Queen for BFI.  His first words to me were "who the hell are you and what are you doing here?"
Nonetheless Horace was always willing to share his wisdom and experience with many of us in the industry, and I am grateful for having known him.

To the Edwards family this a loss to me as well as you. I worked with Horace 13years at BFI.one of the greatest person I've ever worked with and Dewyane as well.I learned a lot from him and I will use it every day.you will be missed..

Seems it was only yesterday that I stood by Horace's side at his brothers funeral in Hampstead, NC. and told him I loved him before he headed back to Virginia.  He was not only my nephew but a good friend as we were growing up together in Bladenboro, NC.  Doris, Dewayne, Kevin, Dana; we love you and pray God will wrap His arms of love mercy and grace around you during this difficult time.  We would like to say thank you to the people of the state of Virginia for being such good friends to Horace over the years.  He was proud to call Virginia home after leaving North Carolina.  God help us all to make heaven our home.

Doris is a good friend of mine and my heart hurts for all of you. Saying prayers for comfort and peace.

I had a business relationship with Horace long before I met him in person. He worked for BFI as their landfill manager at the Charles City Road facility. Later on he came to work for S B COX,Inc and I became to know him better. Always there to help with anything you had to do. That was the Horace I knew.
