

Joyce is survived by her two sons, Edward Lee Nelson, Jr. (Alicia) and Scott Ellis Nelson (Sandra); her daughter, Susan Nelson Weisgerber (Carl); her seven grandchildren, Jessica Nelson, Scott Nelson Jr. (Cami), Bobbi Fletcher (Brian), Alexis Weisgerber (Omar), Brittany Nelson (Justin), Jacob Pruitt (Caroline), and Jenna Wines (Jake); ten great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Nelson Sr.; her parents, Clarence Ellis Sr. and Rose Ellis; two brothers, Clarence Ellis Jr. and William Ellis; and two sisters, Grace Davis and Lois Bartels.
Joyce was born on August 2nd, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Highland Springs High School and started her career with CSX Railroad, where she retired several decades later. Throughout her life, she was a source of love, strength, and unwavering support for those fortunate enough to know her. Whether through her kind words, generous spirit, or quiet acts of care, she made a lasting impact on countless lives.
She dedicated much of her life to her family, whom she loved deeply. As a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories. Her greatest joy came from spending time with those she loved and celebrating life's simple moments together.
Joyce's faith was the foundation of her life. She loved reading her Bible, sharing the gospel, and encouraging others in their walk with Christ. She faithfully served for many years as a Sunday School teacher, choir director, and church pianist, using her gifts to glorify God. In addition to her church ministry, Joyce devoted numerous years to serving at Grace Hope Mission in Baltimore, Maryland, where she ministered through music and shared the love of Christ with those in need. Her unwavering faith, servant’s heart, and compassionate spirit leave a lasting legacy of devotion to God through her love for others.
A viewing will be held on June 13, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, VA 23231, with a service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park, 6217 Memorial Drive, Sandston, VA 23150.
A Celebration of Life honoring Joyce’s enduring faith, loving spirit, and the profound impact she made on all who knew her will be held at Lake Shore Baptist Church, 4613 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD 21122. Further details regarding the date and time will be shared when available.
