Merlin Charles Barber passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 20th, surrounded by his loving family. He was 93 years old, and in those 93 years, he lived a full, beautiful life grounded in love, faith, and kindness.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. Their love was the foundation of our family - a quiet, steady presence that never wavered. Together, they raised three daughters: Debbie, Elaine, and Charlotte. He was deeply proud of each of them and the lives they built.
Merlin was also blessed with three sons-in-law, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He shared a special bond with John Santulli, with whom he loved to fish and spend time outdoors. He had a deep respect and love for Earl Tappan, who sadly passed away in 2021, but whose memory remained close. And Gary Robinson wasn't just family - he was Merlin's best friend. Their friendship was one of laughter, loyalty, and shared stories, and it meant the world to him.
As a grandfather to six and great-grandfather to ten, Merlin embraced the name Popi with pride. But to many, he was also Dad, Merlin, Mr. B, or simply a good friend. And no matter what you called him, one thing was always true: he made you feel loved and welcome.
Merlin proudly served his country in the Korean War as a Private First Class Mortarman in the United States Army. He continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1960. His dedication to service was a testament to his strength of character and quiet courage.
After his military service, Merlin worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad for 15 years. He later retired from Ingersoll Rand, where he was known for his hard work, reliability, and pride in a job well done.
Merlin found joy in the simple things - gardening, mowing the lawn, playing cards, and working on puzzles. He loved to make things with his hands, and he found happiness in giving those handmade gifts to the people he cared about. Whether it was a decoration, a handmade board game, or a puzzle, it came from the heart - and that was just who he was.
He was a quiet man in many ways, but his presence spoke volumes. He was devoted, steady, thoughtful, and kind. A man who didn't need to say much to make you feel at ease. He was the kind of person you could count on - day in and day out.
As a husband, he was unwavering. As a father, he was strong and supportive. As a Popi, he was joyful and proud. As a friend - he was golden.
Merlin was truly a gift to our family. And though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we know his spirit lives on in every one of us - in the lessons he taught us, the love he gave so freely, and the memories we'll carry forever.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2025 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231, with a reception to follow next door in the Nelsen Reception Center.
