Ollie James Courtney, 91, of Richmond, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015. He was born on April 20, 1923. Ollie was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Vesley Courtney; son, Edward J. Vesley; two sisters and six brothers. Mr. Courtney was a longtime member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and Korea. He earned a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in combat in WWII and a letter of heartfelt thanks from President Truman. He was the proud owner and operator of Courtney Body Company, Inc., and he was a member, in good standing, of AA for 35 years, helping many in his “extended family” with recovery. Ollie is survived by his children, Ruby Foster (Clayton), Betty Flanagan (Tom), Walter “Jim” Courtney, Kathy Vesley-Massey (Bill), and Daniel Vesley (Charlotte); grandchildren, Jennifer Goodman (Trey), David Flanagan (Paige), Jordan Windsor, and Joseph E. Vesley; great-grandchildren, Sierra Mickens, Marissa Goodman, Ayden Flanagan, and Eli Flanagan; and caregiver, Mary. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 16, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 6930 Cold Harbor Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Interment will be a 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph St., Richmond, VA 23220. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairfield Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1088, Mechanicsville, VA 23111.
