He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Smith; and grandson, Jesse Smith, and is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary E. Smith; daughter, Vickie Turner (Terry); grandson, Gary Turner; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family, including his church family at Fort Lee Baptist Church, and going to the mountains.
The family will receive friends 5 – 8 pm, Thursday, October 23 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23231 where a funeral service will be held 12 pm, Friday, October 24, 2025. Burial will follow in Washington Memorial Park.
