I worked with "Catfish" when I was in the 192nd.  I was only in the unit for 6 years, but he took me under his wing and showed me how to do things right.  I looked up to him, as an impressionable 19 year old would, and though I was a typical 19-year-old, he always treated me respectfully.  Looking back as a 43-year-old, I can see how he might have done otherwise.  He demonstrated respect, and received it in kind from everyone with whom we interacted.  After my time in the guard, I didn't keep in touch.  I just found out about his death yesterday, and am sad to hear of it.  I don't think he knew it, but he was someone I looked up to and for whom I had great respect.

I regret that I could not attend to Celebrate the Memories that we have of Bob. At work, at golf, and even softball he was a true joy and gentleman. A mutual friend had for some time nagged both us to get in touch, but sadly we failed to make that happen. This I mourn. For knowing him I am thankful that, as they say, he was in the front nine of my life.

We send our condolences to the extended Hughes Family.  It is difficult to adequately express our sadness at the death of your husband, father, son-in-law, brother, ex-brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew, co-worker, confidante, friend and acquaintance.  He was a good guy and will be sorely missed. We hope that you find some comfort in the good memories you have of your time together and knowing that he is now at peace.  It does not lessen the hurt and emptiness you have now, but in time, that will become duller.  Keep his memory and contributions alive by talking about him and honor him by having the strength to go on as you know he would want you to. After my retirement, when I would visit with Shirley, he would often stop by for a drink and conversation. I feel therefore that I had gotten to know him better in the last year.
