She was doting to her husband, children, and grand & great grandchildren. She had the perfect balance of selflessness, and a self-sternness worth idolizing. A grand heart that carried a born-purpose influence, extending into the classrooms not only in her homeland of Puerto Rico, but also the United States.
Adelaida’s family would not have the opportunity and privilege they have today, if it wasn’t for her sacrifices through her love and discipline. She was exemplary, of what it is to be a paragon of a woman.
Adelaida Berdy (Villarini Gonzalez) was born on December 17, 1933 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Her parents were Juan Villarini Colon and Aracelia Gonzalez Cruz.. She was of Spaniard and Taino descent and she was the last survivor of 14 siblings.
Adelaida grew up in Ponce, Puerto Rico and lived there until she married her husband, Ernoe Berdy in 1958. Whom she met in 1956 in Washington DC when she was attending an English special program and he had arrived as a refugee from Hungary. Together they had 4 children, 5 grandchildren and now 4 great grandchildren. Their journey together took them to many different places where they left a mark and or grow roots. Such as, Ponce, Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, Waukegan, Illinois, Michigan: Utica, Redford, Livonia, Northville and Rochester Hills.
For her family, Adelaida was completely devoted to them and loved them unconditionally. They all will always remember her as an incredible mother, one that put them first and the focus of her life. She was always very patient, caring and loved taking care of all of them. They truly enjoyed her cooking and her spoiling them with her Puerto Rican and Hungarian cuisine. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren enjoyed her loving and caring demeanor toward them and enjoyed learning about her culture and food. Through the years, she was also very loving and caring to all her family in Puerto Rico, and she was the matriarch for many years.
Adelaida’s profession was a K-12 teacher and worked 40+ years in several school districts: Ponce High School, District of Columbia, Mt. Clemens Community Schools, Utica Community School, Caribbean High School, and Waukegan High School, retired in 1995. She loved her profession and was very passionate about making a difference in her students’ lives.
We all were blessed to have had in our lives, and learned from her persona to be the change we want to see in the world. Gracias Madre por tu Amor, Bondad, Ejemplo y Convicción.
