Al was quiet and inward by nature. He enjoyed the natural world, friends, and every aspect of Bee Keeping. Al had a quiet sense of humor. When asked if he made honey, he would often reply with a twinkle in his eyes, “The bees help”. Al was known to comment about his career choice, “It’s a sweet business.” When he was asked if he could pick a different career, he said, “I would still choose to be a Beekeeper”.
Al was well known for his honey sales at the Yates Cider Mill and the Franklin Cider Mill and became an icon at the Detroit’s Eastern Market where he faithfully sold honey every weekend for 65 years. At the Michigan State Fair Al and his family won many awards for tasty honey and beautiful displays.
In lieu of donations, please say a prayer for Al that his next adventure bring him the same sweetness he brought to so many and try to reduce your use of pesticides which harms our precious bees. Al will be dearly missed.
