Byrd Douglas Cain III

Byrd Douglas Cain, III, 66, passed away suddenly at his home in Rochester, MI, on June 29, 2026. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Byrd Douglas Cain, Jr. and Sarah Ann Wright as well as his in-laws, Carroll and Pauline Moore of Nashville, TN.

After finishing at Montgomery Bell Academy, Doug graduated cum laude from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, with a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Business. Throughout his professional life, Doug maintained his license as a certified public accountant. He held a variety of positions in both the public and private sector, including CEO, COO, CFO, and membership in Boards of Directors. Doug worked with multinational companies in a variety of industries in the United States, Germany, Japan, and Mexico.

Doug stayed active through his life. He played tennis, golf, and daily games of online chess. Most recently in retirement, pickleball became an instant passion. The friendships he formed with fellow pickleballers deeply enriched the later part of his life. We were all looking forward to watching him compete for a national title later this year.

Doug described himself as a catalyst - someone who makes things happen - regardless of circumstance. In this capacity, his greatest gift was being unapologetically himself. Doug was endlessly curious and wanted to learn more about everyone and everything. Among his myriad accomplishments and accolades, Doug will be most brightly remembered in the hundreds of lives he touched through mentorship. He took advantage of every opportunity to help others reach their full potential. Doug pioneered programs for high school and college student internships and award-winning, nation-leading apprenticeships in the automotive industry in northern Kentucky. Doug enjoyed being of service, whether through individual relationships or motivational and educational speeches to groups.

He was a devout Christian whose deep faith supported a life of purpose, kindness, and generosity. Doug started his days with a Bible verse that he often shared with his family. He was a patient and giving father who never let his children doubt how fiercely he loved them. Although he worked long hours and traveled frequently, Doug always figured out how to show up for every play, recital, track meet, and graduation. Doug’s love for his wife Terry was aspirational. Even after forty-one years of marriage, he still adoringly referred to Terry as “his bride.”

Doug is survived by his wife Terry Moore Cain, and daughters, Virginia Cain and Margo Cantu, of whom he was immensely proud. He was equally proud of their loving husbands, Ethan Machek and Mario Cantu, respectively, whom he viewed as his sons. In April of this year, Doug excitedly welcomed his first grandchild, Caleb Owen Cantu. He is further survived by his siblings, Leslie Cain and Scott Cain (Susie); sisters-in-law Paulette White, Linda Curley, and Sherry Richardson; and his loved nieces and nephew. He was met at Heaven’s Gates by his beloved soul dog, Chester Nimitz.
