Born on July 30, 1932, in Wauseon, Ohio, Dave moved with his family to Brooklyn, Michigan, at the age of five. He graduated as Salutatorian from Brooklyn High School in 1950 before attending Michigan State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Divisional Physical Science with a teaching certificate in science, mathematics, and social studies. Upon graduation in 1954, he also received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Ordnance Corps.
On July 7, 1956, Dave married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Colvin. Together they shared 70 years of marriage and raised three daughters: Sandra Lynn, Cynthia Kay, and Karen Sue.
Dave proudly served his country for 28 years in the United States Army, including more than 14 years of active duty in the Ordnance Corps and Special Weapons program, followed by 14 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. His military career included assignments in Germany, Korea, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Sandia Base, New Mexico, and Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1983.
After his military service, Dave returned to his first passion—teaching. He taught science and mathematics at Clintondale High School in Mount Clemens, Michigan. He earned a Master of Science degree in General Science from Michigan State University and later an Educational Specialist degree in School Administration from Wayne State University. Throughout his career, he inspired generations of students with his knowledge, patience, and dedication.
Dave found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved collecting rocks, playing bridge, tending to his garden, and traveling with Pat. Together they explored many beautiful places, including the Rocky Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, and Hawaii. He was an avid lifelong learner who enjoyed participating in Road Scholar educational travel programs.
A faithful member of University Presbyterian Church, Dave served as an usher for many years and was devoted to his church family. He also gave back to his community by volunteering with the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library for over 20 years.
Above all, Dave cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength, kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to others will be deeply missed.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his daughters, Sandra (Robert) Fulton, Cynthia Disbrow, and Karen (Scott) Hamelink; his granddaughters, Jennifer (Frank) Fulton Sanchez and Sara Fulton; his great-grandson, Mason Fulton; along with extended family and many dear friends.
