Dr. Lynn Howell

February 4, 1933 – July 7, 2025

With full hearts and deep sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Lynn Howell, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and esteemed vascular surgeon, who passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025.

Born February 4, 1933 in Detroit, Lynn was the beloved son of Elmer and LaMoyne Howell, who instilled in him the enduring values of integrity, kindness, and perseverance – qualities that would define his life.

Lynn graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1958, then completed his internship at the University of Hawaii Hospital, where he began shaping a lifelong career marked by compassion, excellence, and humility. He completed his vascular residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and became the first registered vascular surgeon in Oakland County, Michigan. He went on to serve patients and communities at Pontiac General Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac, becoming a highly respected vascular surgeon known for his medical expertise, gentle demeanor, and heartfelt care.

Outside of medicine, Lynn lived a rich life with joy and enthusiasm. He loved the outdoors -- fishing, hunting, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature – but nothing meant more to him than spending time with his family. With a twinkle of mischief in his eye and a story always ready, he brought laughter, wisdom, and warmth to his family and friends.

He shared a lifetime of love with his wife, Mary Ann Howell, building a home filled with organized chaos, laughter, and strong family bonds. Together, they raised a loving family. Lynn was the proud father of Mark (Cindy), Scott (Jill), Brian (Kathleen), Melissa (Kevin), and Chris (Jeanne), his beloved son who preceded him in death.

He was a treasured grandfather to Emily, Erin, Kelleigh, Rainah, Brad, Hillary, Christopher, Ariel, Corbin and Skyler, and a joyful great-grandfather to thirteen. His legacy lives on through the generations – in every kind gesture, every burst of laughter, and every quiet strength they carry forward.

Dr. Lynn Howell lived a life of purpose, principle, and profound love. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed – and remembered, always and forever.

A memorial service for Lynn will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2:00 PM, at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Dr., Rochester, Michigan 48307. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the University of Michigan Medical School or encourages others to celebrate Lynn’s memory by doing something he would have loved: fishing, hunting, telling a great story, helping someone in need, or being present with family.
