Gary James Szostak

Gary was born on April 24, 1963, in Highland Park, Michigan. He was a proud graduate of Henry Ford Detroit High School and went on to build a long and dedicated career with Michigan Bell, where he worked for more than 40 years.

Gary was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh. He was truly a jokester and brought fun and laughter wherever he went. His love of entertaining others even led him and his sister, Kathy, to become members of the Michigan Bell Clowning Association. As “Salty the Clown,” Gary brought smiles and laughter to countless people and created memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Outside of work and clowning, Gary enjoyed many things in life. He loved traveling, especially anywhere warm with beautiful beaches. He had a passion for photography, enjoyed science-fiction movies, biking, and tackling DIY home projects. He was always willing to learn, create, fix, or build something, and he found joy in keeping busy and exploring the things he loved.

Above all, Gary was a devoted family man. He will be deeply missed by his children, Jillian (Justin) Leimback and Doug Szostak, and their mother, Janice; his beloved grandchildren, Hudson, Charlotte, and Adalynn; his sisters, Diane and Kathleen (Timothy); nephews Timothy Jr., Christopher, and Paul; nieces Dana and Lisa; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Gary’s laughter, kindness, humor, and unmistakable personality will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. His family will forever cherish the memories of his jokes, his adventures, his creativity, and the love he gave so freely.

A memorial visitation for Gary will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Drive, Rochester, MI 48307. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m., also at Pixley Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gary’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
