He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Penny, four children, Traci Mitchell, Jill Evans (Jeff), Chris Mitchell (Kerry), Scott Mitchell (Theresa), and eight grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan, Blake, Josh, Ryan, Melody, Shelby, and Misty.
He was born in Detroit, attended public schools and Detroit Institute of Technology for a Math Degree. He retired from the Federal Milk Market Administration in 2001 as the head of the Computer Department.
He loved people and social events, played chess, and all card games. He was very involved in his community, he kept Avalon organized by sharing news about their dinner groups, men's poker night and ladies game night. He used to volunteer his time helping children in need at Care House. He liked to make lists and charts - especially liked to make up the super bowl squares. He made friends wherever he went, talked to everyone, he was generally a happy fellow.
Dick proudly served in the military and will be cremated and laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. A private celebration of life will be held on February 1, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Care House at CareHouse.org, an organization that was close to Dick’s heart.
