Sandy, John was a very dear friend of mine in high school.  Once you came into his life, I didn't see him again, but wondered now and again how he was doing.  I'm so glad you shared the memorial video.  Thank you.

John always believed in me more than I believed in myself.  He was utterly uncompromising in his expectation that I be my best self, and had an unshakable conviction that I was something truly special--better than I ever thought I could be.  He threw his entire heart and soul—and then some--into helping me become that person, and everything good that I have in my life today is because of him.

Although John didn’t give me the wonderful family that has rallied around me and supported me so fiercely in my time of loss, he did spend years working to get me to come out of my shell and drop my defenses so that I could cultivate and deepen those relationships into so much more than just family obligation.  In return, my family embraced John and made them one of their own--and for that I am forever grateful.

I have a satisfying and rewarding career because of John.  He was the one who first had the courage to take the step of signing up with temp agencies in order to make the move out of restaurant work, and through trial and error found the very best one to work for.  So when I was ready to make that same move in 1985, I knew to go right to Kelly Services—and I’ve been with them ever since.  Of course at a time like this it’s not the work that means the most to me, but the people.  The outpouring of love and support from my Kelly family has moved me beyond words.  

And then there are all of our friends.  John was a loving and social person whose friends meant the world to him.  Being a lifelong introvert, I never had many friends of my own so John worked tirelessly pushing me to get to know the people in his social circle as myself rather than as just his wife, and to make connections of my own.  As a result I now have deep, enduring friendships that I know will be a lifeline for me in the difficult days, months and years ahead.

In his last weeks John often expressed frustration that he couldn't do more for me.  But in truth, he had done everything for me already.

He's always been such a fun and loving part of the family my whole life. Holidays and birthday parties at grandma and grandpa's house won't be the same without him. I'm glad we got to recreate this photo last year, and I will always keep it close.
