Did you ever meet someone who drew you to them in an inexplicable way? Their warmth and personality were so compelling that you wanted to know them more? This was the kind of person Elexis “Lexy” Marie Patton was. Throughout her too-short life, she touched thousands with her faith and compassion, her joy and strength.
Lexy was born on February 6, 1993. She graduated from Lancaster Baptist School in Lancaster, CA, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL. On November 2, 2019, Lexy married her love, Nicholas Patton.
The Pattons enjoyed spending time with their family, friends and dogs; enjoyed travelling around Michigan; and attended Woodside Bible Church where Lexy was able to grow in her faith and. Another passion was her role as a labor and delivery nurse for Beaumont Health in Royal Oak. During her time at Beaumont, Lexy received the Daisy Award, an international award established to celebrate the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day. Lexy was honored to receive this award, made especially momentous because the recipients are nominated and chosen by their co-workers.
Life was not always easy though. On Valentine’s Day 2020, barely three months after she was married, Lexy was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. In spite of this disheartening diagnosis, Lexy kept her faith and not only fought the battle, but she led the fight on behalf of others as well. Lexy co-founded the Stomach Cancer Sisters group on Facebook, a group created to support and raise awareness about young women diagnosed with stomach cancer. With hundreds of followers on Facebook and her Caring Bridge journal, Lexy encouraged people with her big smile and rock-solid faith. Nick was also an inspiration as he never left her side throughout doctors’ appointments, treatments, scans, and providing at-home care. Together, the Pattons were open and honest about the battle they faced. Lexy shared her testimony of how cancer affects the patient both physically and emotionally as well as how it affects the family; her raw honesty was an inspiration to so many .
In September 2020, Lexy was declared cancer free! The odds were against her but for a few months she was able to live without the stigma of cancer. Through her presence on social media, her story caught the attention of others, and she was interviewed for medical journals and was invited to participate in patient/doctor forums to advocate for stomach cancer.
Although Lexy lost the battle with cancer, she won at maintaining a beautiful faith in the love and grace of God. She won at sharing many months with a husband who adored her and supported her without question. She won at bringing awareness to a cancer that affects few young people but is devastating. She won at encouraging thousands by making herself vulnerable and sharing her pain and suffering.
Lexy is survived by her husband Nicholas Garrett Patton, parents Wael and Rebecca Elmaksoud and brothers Brandon Reynolds and Jacob Elmaksoud.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 2, at Woodside Bible Church, 6600 Rochester Rd, Troy, MI 48085. The family will receive guests before the service at the church from 9-11 am. To honor Lexy and her fight against stomach cancer, memorials can be made to Hope for Stomach Cancer.
