Mary Franklin (Frailey) Callan passed away peacefully in Tomball, Texas on June 23, 2025. Mary, also lovingly known as “Tucky” or “The General”, was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1945 to Jack and Mary Frailey. After moving to Pennsylvania and New York, the Frailey family settled in Pleasant Ridge, MI. Mary briefly attended St. Mary’s High School in Royal Oak, before graduating from Mercy High School, class of 1963. It was in Pleasant Ridge where she met her life-long best friend, Anne Westrick Welch (Marty) at just 15 years old and her husband of 25 years who proceeded her in death, John Callan.
Mary attended Catherine Spaulding College in Louisville, Kentucky, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She began her career at Beaumont Hospital and later worked at Medical Center Pediatrics where she met some of her dearest friends. She also worked at Travelers Insurance as a nurse case manager.
While she loved the nursing profession, she preferred to be home with her four children. She and John had Sean Patrick Callan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Christopher John Callan of The Woodlands, Texas, Patrick (Angela) Callan of Orlando, Florida and Kathleen “Katie” Anne (Michael) Callan-Wehrle of Magnolia, Texas.
Mary was very involved in the swimming community and served as president or on the board of directors at Forest Hills Swim Club, Royal Oak Penguins and Birmingham Blue Dolphins. She was also very active in volunteering at Holy Name School. Many of these endeavors were done with Anne Welch by her side. The Callan/Welch family bond grew and shared in many fond memories like making Christmas cookies, baptisms, first communions and trips up north. Mary was so incredibly proud to be the God Mother to Anne’s daughter, Mary Beth (Andrew) Mahtaney and remained close to her throughout her life.
Perhaps the greatest joy in Mary's life was her 7 grandchildren. Mary Alexandra “Allie” Callan, Kevin “Patrick” Callan, Christopher “Jack” Callan, Quinn Christopher Callan, Caitlin Victoria Callan, Cassidy Houston Callan and Rado Arlen Wehrle.
Mary is proceeded in death by parents Jack and Mary, sister Marty, brother-in-law John Carolin and ex-husband but dear friend John Callan.
She is survived by her siblings, Dennis (Anne) Frailey of Dallas, Texas, Penny (Frailey) Carolin of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Kevin Frailey of Holt, Michigan, as well John’s sister Diane (Tim) Fekete of Pleasant Ridge, MI. She was loved dearly by her Frailey nieces and nephews Maureen, Jonathon, Megan, Rachel, Tori and Connor. She also remained close with the Callan side of the family, especially nieces and nephews Tommy, Jane, Melissa, Michael, Matthew, Devon and Erin.
