Michael William Kirkland, Sr., affectionately known as “Mike” to all who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, with his beloved wife, Kelly Underwood, at his side. He was 74 years old.
Born on July 5, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, Mike was the son of William Henry Kirkland and Karen Rowe Kittle. He graduated from Detroit Cody High School in 1968 and went on to live a life marked by deep faith, personal dedication, and lasting friendships.
Mike proudly served in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he was honored with the Expert Rifle Badge and Sharpshooter Badge, reflecting his commitment and skill. After his military service, he went on to build a successful career as a QA Lead Auditor for Energy Steel, a role that reflected his meticulous nature and strong work ethic.
A devout Christian, Mike found deep joy in his faith and served faithfully as head usher at Faith Church, where he greeted others with his trademark warmth and attentiveness. Church was not just a place of worship for him, but a community he loved and cared for deeply.
An avid runner, Mike completed many marathons over the years and found peace and joy in running his favorite trails—especially along the Paint Creek Trail in Rochester and around Hidden Valley Apartments in Ann Arbor, two places close to his heart. He was also a chess enthusiast, a passionate collector of antiques and various treasures, and a self-proclaimed hunter of “good deals.” He loved music and his guitars, and he kept active with regular visits to the gym.
Mike’s life was filled with meaningful relationships. He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly; his devoted son, Michael Kirkland, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Trishia; and his two treasured grandchildren, Liberty and Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings—Robert McConachie, Jr., Joann Pellegrin, and Nancy.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who brought him pride and joy: Cindi Zagata, Lisa Pellegrin, Kelly McConachie, Bill Pellegrin, Jim Pellegrin, Ken Cronin, Rob McConachie III, and Al Cronin. Beyond family, Mike maintained lifelong connections with high school friends, former roommates, and countless others whose lives he touched with his generous spirit.
Known for his bright smile, deep laugh, and affable demeanor, Mike brought joy and friendship to every room he entered. He especially loved sharing laughter with friends and family over a great meal, at a concert, or during one of his many lively conversations.
Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to love him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and unwavering faith remains an enduring blessing. He now rests peacefully in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Memorial Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2025 from 5:30pm until the time of the Memorial Service at 7:00pm at Faith Church, 160 W. Hamlin Road, Rochester Hills.
