Michael was born Oct. 16, 1960, to Charles R. and Gloria A. (nee Poust) Rutan. He was raised in Grosse Pointe Farms and graduated from Grosse Pointe North High School.
Michael’s early passions for technology and music shaped his life’s journey. He pursued studies at Macomb Community College and Lawrence Institute of Technology, leveraging his technical skills to provide set-up and tech support for popular bands in the metro-Detroit area. He also played in the band Adrenalin with his high school friends.
Deeply rooted in his Christian faith, Michael found purpose and joy at Kensington Church in Troy. Leading by example, he became a proud member of Promise Keepers. His technical prowess propelled his desire to guide the installation of the audio and visual systems in new churches across the country, including in Florida, Texas and throughout the Midwest.
Michael answered God’s call to bear witness, dedicating just shy of 25 years to production arts and youth ministries. He excelled at connecting with and supporting teens as they navigated their faith, school, and relationships with family and friends. Michael’s devotion as a skilled and talented educator and mentor left a lasting impact on countless lives within the church community and beyond.
Michael is survived by his brother, Charles Rutan (Judith); sisters, Kathryn Dean, Michelle Rutan (Norman Grosse) and Jeanne Murray (David); as well as four nieces, five nephews, extended family and treasured friends. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Mary Rutan; and niece, Lara Rutan. Known affectionately as Uncle Buck, Holmes, and Ruddy, Michael will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to all of Michael’s medical providers for their exceptional and remarkable care, empathy and expertise, along with relentless support and time.
Michael’s Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Kensington Church in Troy.
