Norman was born the son of Oscar and Eva (Belland) Hunstad in Ihlen, Minnesota on August 25, 1924. He served in the US Army during WWII. Norman earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Iowa School of Engineering. He married Freda Soukup on July 2nd, 1950 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and they raised their family in Rochester, Michigan. Norman had a 35 year career at General Motors retiring as the assistant department head for the Fuels and Lubricants Division at the GM Technical Center. Post retirement from GM, Norman was a consultant for Total Petroleum.
Norman was on the planning commission for the city of Rochester and a founding member of University Presbyterian Church. He was recognized by the SAE with the 2017 SAE Lifetime Achievement award at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
Norman had a passion for scrabble, grammar, fishing, traveling, and skiing. He was an early computer enthusiast. His engineering prowess made him an early “D.I.Y.”er.
Norman is survived by his children Dr. Joseph (Sherry) Hunstad, Mary Angelini, and Dr. David (Karen) Hunstad; grandchildren Lauren (Michael) Connors, Megan Hunstad, Alex (Katie) Hunstad, Erik (Catherine) Hunstad, Hanna Hunstad, Dan (Sarah) Angelini, Paul Angelini, Mark (Allison) Angelini, and Sarah Angelini; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Freda Hunstad; parents; siblings; and granddaughter Emma C. Hunstad.
A memorial gathering and service will be held on Saturday May 6th, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. at University Presbyterian Church, located at 1385 South Adams Road in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Norman’s honor to the existing Norman A. Hunstad Engineering Scholarship fund at the University of Iowa. He endowed this scholarship in 2012.
