
Robert (Bob) Maurice Cox, 93, of Rochester Hills, MI, passed away on December 14, 2017. He was born in Detroit, MI on October 20, 1924. Bob graduated from Ferndale High school in December, 1942.
He is survived by daughters Rebecca (Michael) Thornton and Robin (Jeffrey) Hughes; Grandchildren Nicole (Matthew) Evo, Robert (Stacy) Remick, Stacey (Frank) Doria, and Donovan Hughes; eight Great Grandchildren and one Great Great Granddaughter.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Dorothea (Dotsy) Jeanne Foether, whom he married on July, 17, 1948 in Birmingham, MI. He was also preceded in death by his sister Lorraine Maurice Bartha.
Bob served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Bob’s early employment was working for Jim Ashmore in Ferndale, MI, then owning and operating a cigarette machine business consisting of one hundred machines, and ultimately owning The Grapevine Bar and Grill in Berkley for 25 years from 1951-1977, at which time he retired. In his bar was a record breaking polar bear that he took in Point Barrow, Alaska in 1970.
Bob’s hobbies included shooting skeet, trap and sporting clays. He was an avid hunter and took many of the game animals in North America, including deer, mule deer, elk, moose, antelope, brown bear, black bear, grizzly bear and dahl sheep, some of which held Boone and Crockett records. Bob was also a passionate pheasant hunter and usually had one of his “Clown’s” with him – his Weimaraner hunting dogs.
He was a lifetime member of the Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress.
Bob also loved the outdoors and owned a cabin on Mullet Lake near Cheboygan, Michigan, for thirteen years, a 10-acre tree farm in Afton, Michigan and other properties in both lower and upper Michigan. He spent his retirement years on 420 acres in Champion, MI, which included a private 80 acre lake named Bush Lake.
His funeral service was held at Pixley Funeral Home on December 16, 2017.
