Robert Brian Thomas, 81, of Rochester Hills, Michigan passed away on May 14, 2026. Born March 11, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, Robert lived a life shaped by steady devotion to family, a deep love of sport, and a quiet determination to keep growing into a better version of himself.
Robert pursued his education with purpose, earning a Master's degree in Counseling from Wayne State University and a Bachelor's of the Arts in history from University of Detroit, where he also served as the editor-in-chief of the university yearbook. Following graduation, he began his career teaching at a parochial school and later became yearbook editor at Salesian Catholic High School. A dedicated hockey player well into the 1980's, he brought the same energy and leadership to every part of his life. He also led the job placement office at Wayne State, helping guide countless students and graduates toward meaningful careers. Throughout his life, Robert reflected a mind that valued learning and a spirit that never stopped striving for growth. Bob was Director of Career and Placement at Oakland University for over 20 years. He found great purpose in mentoring young adults as they pursued their own paths in life, taking immense pride in celebrating their achievements and successes.
Sports were not simply something Robert enjoyed; he would probably have chosen the sound of sneakers squeaking on a gym floor over music any day. He played pickleball at the OPC and spent years on the ice with the Grosse Pointe Old Devils Hockey Team.
Robert also had an eye for the world around him. An amateur photographer but a sparkling conversationalist, he was always eager to share the photos he took with a new friend. He was a proud 38-year member of AA and a CoDA member. Underneath it all was a man constantly working on his outlook on life, sharing what he had learned while also living the words he offered to others.
Family mattered to Robert, and so he showed up consistently, sincerely, and with heart. He attended every single sports game or event his kids and grandkids played, showing up with the kind of faithful presence that made others feel seen and supported. He coached basketball for his children and grandchildren, and in recent years participated in community exercise classes with other seniors.
Robert is survived by his wife, Ann D. Thomas; his son, Scott Thomas; his daughter, Dawn (Richard) Thomas; his grandchildren, Jason Gilbert, Jack Gilbert, Tori Thomas, and Kayla West; and his sister, Sue (Donald Levin) Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Albert Thomas, and his sister Mary Drogosch.
Memorial Visitation will be held at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Dr., Rochester, Michigan 48307, on May 20, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm followed by a memorial service beginning at 5:00 pm. Immediately following the memorial service approx 6:00pm we invite you to join us in playing a couple rounds of billiards at Main Street Billiards, 215 S. Main Street, Rochester, MI 48307.
