Died: January 19, 2012
Chief was born and raised in Utica, Michigan. He attended Utica public
schools and graduated from Utica High School. He attended Michigan
State University and then entered the army during WWII. Prior to
going overseas to serve in Europe, the army sent him to the University
of South Dakota where he met and married Violet Derby. Chief and Vi
settled in Utica, Michigan where Chief worked in the family lumber
business with his brother Jim and father Clarence. Chief enjoyed his
work at Church’s Lumber. He was active in the National Lumber
Dealers and Lumbermen’s Merchandising Corporation. He and Vi lived
in Glen Arbor, Michigan and Naples, Florida. Chief particularly enjoyed
walking the beach and bird watching with Vi, along with horses, cattle
and sports. Vi preceded Chief in death in 2007. Chief is survived by his
three children, Sue Church of Denver Colorado, Kathy McFerren of
Rochester Michigan, Bill Church of Moscow, Idaho; 8 grandchildren and
9 great grandchildren, all of whom he loved to be with. There will be a
private memorial service.
