Our condolences to the family of Mrs. Crawford. 

 In 2018 there was a gathering of 50 year (or more) members of the church, and I couldn't have been more honored to be seated next to Mrs. Crawford. My wife Kim took the photo that I've included. At that time I was leaning over and saying to her "most days I look around and feel pretty old, but at this moment with this group I feel like a kid!". Laughing, Mrs. Crawford gave me the "Oh, Bill" just like she did when I was cracking wise as a kid when she was my Sunday School teacher decades before. 

Mrs. Crawford was truly a delightful person, a pleasure to know as a child and as an adult, and one of the saints of St. Paul's.


Oh how I loved Sally. She radiated joy. I never saw her without a huge smile. She was always an encouragement to me. She wrote me emails in college and after, and always shared the latest Detroit and UM/MSU sports scores. Her homemade washcloths were a staple in my mom’s home and later in mine. She was the biggest fan and supporter of St. Paul’s and its Pastors and I am confident her prayers, dedication  and support have touched many. I remember her telling me about the Yaha group. I am grateful to have known her and some of her family members- the Sanfords and her granddaughter Andrea at Hope College. I know she was welcomed with “well done good and faithful servant.” Merry Christmas in heaven, Sally. 

How I loved Sally.  I have a picture of the two of us which was taken at the Big Boy in Rochester, where else?  Also it must be noted that Sally died on my birthday.  Always with me and I will add a candle to next  year's cake .

Dear Judy, Chris, Andrea, Scot, Sarah & Jeremy,

Sending all of you my sincerest sympathies in the loss of your mom and grandma, and great-grandma.  I know her family was her greatest joy and I hope that your memories of her will lift you up in this most difficult time.  Sending you love and hugs.

Sally Crawford was a precious woman and a joy to know my whole life. She and Jim were longtime friends with my mother and father, having both lived in Pontiac in the 1950s. After my folks died, Sally made sure to call often and send cards. She kept in touch just to make sure all was well. She left wonderful messages, too. When I’d call her back, the Tigers game was always on in warm weather. Faithfully, year after year, she was in the second row of the balcony during the 11 a.m. St. Paul’s worship service. And her hand-knitted dish cloths grace the home of nearly every single St. Paul’s member … and all their friends and family. She knitted them and then donated all the proceeds from their sale to missions. She has earned her wings, faithful servant that she was. She served on the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees for many years and the Administrative Board as well. She was truly one of a kind. I am so glad I knew her. And I will miss her so much. I am comforted with the assurance that she and Jim are reunited.  

It is hard to imagine my world without Sally Crawford.  The telephone calls checking on my well being; the memories of her saying "yes" when I called her to see if she was available to be a substitute teacher when I was principal at McGregor School.  She NEVER turned me down.  Jim and Sally were wonderful parents and did so much for me.  They attended all of our children's weddings, even flying to Hawaii to do so.  Sally never forgot an anniversary.  We all attended St. Paul's UMC and the Crawford children , Bruce, Jane and Judy attended my school as well.  Sally was family to me.  We never ended a conversation without saying, "I love you," and we meant it!    I still feel close to Jane and Judy today.....My late wife, Marilyn, and I valued Sally so very much.  She was one of a kind and we loved her.
