Sylvia Mary Gallagher, age 87, of Rochester, Michigan died peacefully August 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born September 7, 1936 to parents Willis and Mary Waterman, Sylvia lived in a close-knit Polish neighborhood in Detroit until her family moved to Roscommon. Growing up, Sylvia was a clever student and avid reader, but stood out with her beautiful singing voice. She made friends wherever she went, including her four years as a spartan at Michigan State University. She put her talents in communication and creativity to use as an engaging elementary school teacher. During this time she met her husband, Edward Gallagher. They lived in West Bloomfield where daughters Amy and Sara were born, as well as in Roscommon, before settling in Rochester, Michigan.
Sylvia’s life was rich with interests. Transforming a barren backyard, she designed, planted and grew a magazine worthy landscape. Gardening to her was like meditation. She continued her love of fiction and nonfiction through multiple book clubs and was a keen player in bridge clubs over many decades.
But what those who knew her best will forever cherish about Sylvia was her endearing and friendly manner, her witty humor and infectious laugh, and her ability to see the best in everyone. She inspired her family and friends with her positive zest for life. She will be deeply missed.
Predeceased by her parents and parents-in-law, her brother Bill and sister-in-law Shirley Waterman, Sylvia’s memory is honored by her devoted husband, Ed, her children Amy (Brian) Woodruff of East Grand Rapids and Sara (Jay) Zocher of Ann Arbor; and her grandchildren, Grace, Ella, Nathan, Henry, and Lily; as well as in-laws Jean and Charles Wilkins and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024 from 10:00am until the time of the Memorial Service at 12:00pm, followed by a Memorial Luncheon, at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Drive, Rochester.
Donations can be made in honor of Sylvia Mary Gallagher to the American Association of University Women or Michigan Parkinson Foundation.
