Vinod was born in Dalhousie, India. Her parents were Dr. Fakir Chand Ghai and Shakuntala Devi. She was the middle child - she had two older brothers, Nirmal and Nindi, a younger sister, Sushma, and a younger brother, Arun.
She met her husband, Satya Bhushan Sehgal, through her brother Nirmal. The two were close friends at their engineering college and she met Satya when he visited Dalhousie. She and Satya were married Nov. 27, 1960, a few days after she turned 21. He was 26. They raised three children and were married for more than 30 years until his death in 1992.
Satya and Vinod came to the United States in 1969. While she never lost sight of her Indian roots, Vinod came to embrace over the years many things that her new life had to offer. She eventually became a proud American citizen.
Vinod loved to travel and she loved the theater, making many trips to New York and Toronto with her daughters to see Broadway productions. She was an amazing cook; she grew to love sports, especially the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Red Wings, and she loved animals, raising six dogs of her own and also contributing to many animal charities, among others.
Vinod is survived by her children Ritu, Anu and Rajeev (Helen), her granddaughter Aesha, her sister, Sushma, her brother Nindi, and many nieces and nephews.
