Claire F. Hayes

Claire Frances Hayes, age 89, passed away on September 26, 2018. The daughter of the late Lawrence and Nellie (Paté) Ver’Schneider, grew up in Lowville, N.Y., where she worked in the family business, Ver’s Restaurant, and graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1946. She received her B.S. in biology from St. Rose College, Albany, in 1950. She taught kindergarten in Rome, N.Y. where she met James Hayes. Claire & Jim were married Aug. 22, 1953 at St. Peter’s Church in Lowville, and made their home in Rome where they raised four children and were active in St. Mary’s Church. In 2007 they moved to St. John’s Meadows in Rochester and in Dec. 2011 they both entered St. John’s Home, where they were able to share a room until Jim’s death in July 2015.
Claire is predeceased by her husband James Hayes, daughter Sr. Ann Marie Hayes of the Suffering Servant, O.C.D., brother William (Bill) Ver’Schneider, brother-in-law Willis Johnson, and sisters-in-law Audrey Ver’Schneider and Caroline Ver’Schneider.
She is survived by her son Lawrence (Diane) Hayes, daughter Martha (Roger Sauterer) Hayes, son Joseph (Gail) Hayes, grandchildren Seán Hayes, Liam Hayes, Jessalyn (Jeffery) Bell, Megan (Robert) Badore, Erik Hayes and Jack Hayes, great-granddaughter Jovienne Bell, brothers Jack (Jeannie) Ver’Schneider, Eugene (Cindy) Ver’Schneider, and Rev. Neil Ver’Schneider, S.J., sisters-in-law Eleanor Ver’Schneider and Katherine Johnson, also numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Sun. Oct. 7th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home of ALVAH HALLORAN & SON, 2125 Chili Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14624. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Mon. Oct. 8th, 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne Church, 1600 Mt. Hope Ave, Rochester, N.Y. 14620. Interment Tues. Oct.9th, 11:00 a.m. at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
