Elizabeth "Bette" M. Highland (Hayes) died Friday, May 18, 2012 at age 96. She was born in Syracuse on May 28, 1915 to Dennis and Elizabeth Hayes. Predeceased by her husband, Joseph; son, James; brother, William Hayes; and sister, Marianne Larkin. She is survived by her daughter, Denise (Igor) Shukoff; grandsons, Bryan and Peter Shukoff, both of Los Angeles; and sister, Barbara Hayes of Syracuse; many nieces and nephews. Bette served with the US Navy WAVES during WWII. She enjoyed family, travel, swimming, gardening, movies and dancing. The family would like to thank the caring staff of St. John’s Community, and recently Lifetime Care Hospice, for the kindness and compassion shown to Bette.
There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, 11am at St. Monica’s Church, Rochester Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lifespan of Greater Rochester, 1900 S. Clinton Ave., Rochester, NY 14618 or the Women’s Memorial Foundation, Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042.
