

He is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Mae Hilbert; his sons, James (Brenda), and Frank (Maria); son-in-law, Michael Ferugia; grandchildren: Jason, Travis, Danielle, Matt, Nicole, Christina, Julie, Stephen, Anthony, and James; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Maggie Hill and Mary Rita (Joe) Scanlon; brother, Paul Hilbert; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Mary Ferugia, brother, Jack Hilbert, and sister, Ann Mastrodonato.
Jim was born and raised in Rochester’s 19th Ward, the son of the late James & Anna Hilbert. He graduated from Aquinas High School, Class of 1948. After High School, Jim would enter the U.S. Army and take part in the Korean Conflict serving overseas in Korea. Upon his return from the service, he would eventually begin working for Eastman Kodak, retiring after a 34-year career. Jim was also very proud to be involved in the Rochester area Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he would serve as a Captain for 5 years during and after his career with Kodak.
Jim had a great love of the water, whether it was swimming or boating, in or on the water was his favorite place to be. He was also a great all-around handyman earning him the nickname “MacGyver”. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Funeral Mass honoring his life and faith will be held at 9:30AM on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at St. Pius the Tenth Church, 3010 Chili Ave. Rochester, NY 14624. Interment with military honors will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. There will be no prior calling hours as per his wishes.
