James was born in Milton, PA, to Russell and Pauline Swanger on December 23,1940. Even though he moved to New York State when he was six years old, he always longed for Pennsylvania. Jim grew up in Brockport and graduated from Brockport High School. He married the love of his life, Shiela Guthrie in 1962; and together they raised their children, Todd (Lynn), Beth (Darren) Malone and Emily as well as numerous foster children in Hilton, NY. During those years he was active in the Hilton Fire Department and the Hilton United Methodist Church.
He was employed as a security guard at Eastman Kodak from 1966-1992. In his “retirement” he worked at a hardware store and in the hardwood flooring business with his son, Todd. He also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, ARC, Thrift Shop, Food Pantries in Florida and New York, and a mission trip to Louisiana.
Starting in 1984, when Shiela entered ministry in the United Methodist Church, the family moved to Springwater/Websters Crossing, Rush, Batavia, and Victor. Jim made many friends along the way. Beginning in 2003 winters were spent in Sebring, Florida. They also lived in Henrietta and now Geneseo, NY.
Jim loved riding his bicycle and fixing them to give away to anyone who needed one. He enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles, was an avid reader, loved learning about the Civil War, but most of all he loved…peanut butter!
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shiela, and his children; his living legacy is his four grandchildren, Cory (Kristen) Malone, Nathan (Stacey) Swanger, Jamie (Evan) Vianese, and Jack (Page) Swanger; and seven Great-Grandchildren, Ferryn and Bode Vianese, Savanna and Scarlett Swanger, Everett and Peregrine Swanger, and Wilder James Malone. He is also survived by his brother, Russell (Carol) Swanger, Jr.
He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers, Richard and William.
A memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at 2:00PM at the Geneseo United Methodist Church, 4520 Genesee St., Geneseo, NY 14454.
Gifts in Jim’s name may be given to Livingston County Habitat for Humanity, or a gift of Peanut Butter to your local Food Pantry.
