Karl was born in Rochester, NY on September 1, 1928, the son of the late, Layton and Ida [Koeberle] Northrup. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he would serve as an M.P. while stationed in Japan just after WWII ended.
After his Honorable discharge from the Army, Karl would go to Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY, where he would earn a degree in electrical engineering. While attending Clarkson he met his future wife, Nancy. They would go on to marry in 1950, and then move to Rochester upon his graduation from Clarkson in 1952.
He began employment right out of college as an electrical engineer with the Haloid Company, which would go on to become the Xerox Corporation. He would retire after over 40 years of service and hold several patents for illumination systems in Xerox copiers.
Karl had a great interest in wine and winemaking. He even had his own small vineyard at his home. As a longtime member of the American Wine Society he was instrumental in establishing the home winemaking competition at the New York State Fair. He would go on to open his own wine and beer making supply store at Schoen Place in Pittsford, NY, called the Wine Press, which he and his wife would own and operate for 25 years.
Karl was very active in his church, the Indian Landing Lutheran Church, in Brighton, where he served on the church council. He was an avid American History enthusiast, and also an active member of the CA Palmer Fife and Drum Corp of Palmyra, NY, which he would go on to become director of for several years. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, at which he was very skilled. He also greatly enjoyed boating and fishing.
He is survived by his children: Mark (Sue) Northrup, Karla (Tom) Faith, and Laurie (Robert) DiPasquale; Grandchildren: Lauren (Brandon) Loveless, Hillary (Adam Szeluga) DiPasquale, Nick (Joanna Santiago) DiPasquale, Adam (Liz) Northrup, Rachel (Aaron) Fritz, Brian (Jessica) Faith, Jordan (Rylie) Faith, and Emily Faith; Great-grandchildren: Bristol, Marlow, Mila, Kane, Carter, and baby boy Faith who is on the way; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Nancy Northrup and his brother, Norman Northrup.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday, December 12, 2022 from 5-7pm at the Funeral Home of ALVAH HALLORAN & SON, 2125 Chili Ave., Rochester, NY 14624, where a memorial service will be held immediately following at 7:00pm. Interment with military honors will take place in White Haven Memorial Park.
