Lillie Revelta Gary, a devoted nurse, spirited adventurer, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025 in Rochester, New York, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90 years old.
Born on June 29, 1935, in Seaboard, North Carolina, Lillie displayed exceptional intelligence from a young age-earning straight A's throughout her school years without ever needing to study. She attended Mt. Moriah Elementary School and graduated from Coates High School, both located in her hometown. Lillie enjoyed a lively childhood, especially with her two sisters, often getting into harmless mischief with her sister Delois, with whom she shared a special bond.
In 1951, as a young woman, Lillie married and moved to Rochester, New York, bringing along her son. She developed a passion for the medical field and began working at Strong Memorial Hospital. Her determination and care for others led her to pursue and obtain her nursing degree, eventually becoming a registered nurse.
Lillie's career took her across several states-including Florida, Ohio, and Oklahoma-but in the early 1970's, she settled in Indianapolis, Indiana. There, she found her calling at the Indiana Women's State Prison, where she served with dedication as the Head RN in Infectious Disease for 30 years. Her work left a lasting impact on the institution and those in her care.
Beyond her remarkable professional life, Lillie was a woman of deep passions and vibrant energy. She loved traveling and was proud to have taken 12 cruises during her lifetime. She had a keen sense of fashion, a love for Western movies, and a deep appreciation for Blues and Gospel music. One of her proudest experiences was touring the U.S. with Bobby "Blue" Bland and his band.
In April 2023, Lillie made the heartfelt decision to return to Rochester, NY, to be closer to her family. The final years of her life were filled with joy, love, and togetherness, attending family gatherings and creating lasting memories with those she held dear.
Lillie was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Arneeza Gary; her sister, Virginia Nevills; and her son, Dotson Cooper Jr.
She is survived by her loving sister, Delois Cooper (Robert); her devoted daughter, Regina Cooper and son, Melvin Moore Jr.; cherished grandchildren, Pamela Cooper, Brian Cooper, Arneesa Cooper, Kimberly Cooper-Tyler (Michael), Terrance Cooper (Elizabeth), Melvin Griffin (Kendra), and Markeisha Moore. She also leaves behind her very special cousin, Elizabeth "Anne" Johnson; family friend, Denise Griffin-Warfield; dear friend, James Faceson; and a host of extended family and friends who will continue to celebrate her memory.
Family and friends are invited to attend Lillie's Memorial Service, Friday, October 24, 2025 at 1:00pm at Alvah Halloran & Son Funeral Home, 2125 Chili Avenue, Rochester, NY 14624.
