Mike Fields passed into deep peace on May 22, 2023, weeks shy of his 91st birthday. A speaker of many languages, though learned in only English, he made his foray into other tongues a ritual at family gatherings. He was most fluent in “a bit of better butter.”
Mike was above all, a devoted and adoring husband to Carolyn Marcus, his wife of forty years. He also lovingly embraced his adult stepchildren, Gail (Hank) Ferraioli and Dan (Sue Shapiro) Lebowitz and became an endearing grandfather to their children and grandchildren. Survived by them all, Mike was also survived by his children from his first marriage, Jill Furst (Marc Pomerantz) and her two children and grandchildren, and Peter Harris (Alex Hernandez).
A Korean War veteran, Mike was appreciative of the services of the Veterans Association. For many years, he was an active and avid member of the Venice Gondoliers Barbershop Chorus in Florida. When not singing with them, he would often listen to other of his favorite vocalists, including Mel Torme, Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra and John Denver.
Mike wrapped his arms around large and small dogs with equal affection, enjoyed telling jokes while laughing at them with his audience, imbibed in favorite foods with relish (yes, hot dogs were among his culinary favorites), and played poker regularly with a group in FL and occasionally with friends in NY.
His career in sales from insurance to cemetery plots put him in touch with people at different stages of their lives and he related warmly to them all. Enjoying the repartee between friends and thoughtful conversations with family, Mike also was attuned to current events and engaged in regular group political discussions in Rochester, NY.
From his first years in Brooklyn NY, Mike followed his heart in his mid and later years to Dallas, TX, Tucson, AZ, Venice, FL and Rochester, NY. Toward the end of his days, Mike often expressed to God his great gratitude for his wonderful life. Those who survived him are grateful for him having been in ours.
As per his wishes, no public funeral services will be held.
