Stephen G. Cheshire passed unexpectedly on May 5, 2026, at the age of 72 in Rochester, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Patricia; and brothers, Rodney, Mark, Paul, David, and Joseph. Steve is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Joanne Cheshire; his sons, Jamie (Stefanie), Justin, and Garrett; grandchildren, Taylor, MacKenzie, Sadie, and Miles; and siblings, George (Janice), Mary (Neal), Ruth (Bob), Peggy (Kendall), and Becky. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
Steve joined the United States Navy, where he served fueling planes aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He then founded Cheshire Audio Visual Inc. in Rochester, and operated the business alongside his sons.
Those who knew Steve will remember a man who carried a distinctive energy: an impulsive, larger-than-life character paired with a generous heart. He was loving and humble, the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back, and he did so not for recognition, but because it was simply his way. Many were helped by Stephen—sometimes financially, sometimes through dark and difficult times—and he had a rare instinct for noticing when someone was struggling. He offered hope in practical ways and in the steady assurance that no one had to face hardship alone.
Steve lived for creating moments that mattered. His favorite weekend of the year was the Father’s Day fishing tournament with his family in Three Mile Bay, a tradition that reflected how much he valued family, togetherness, and the simple joy of time well spent. He also cherished being with kids, and there was something enduringly youthful in him—a kid at heart who delighted in making memories for others.
Steve will be remembered with respect and gratitude, and he will be missed more than words can adequately express. His life stands as a testament to how far compassion can reach when it is offered freely, and how much light one person can bring to others simply by caring.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 2:00pm-5:00pm at Alvah Halloran & Son Funeral Home, 2125 Chili Avenue, Rochester, NY, where a memorial service will immediately follow at 5:00pm.
