

John W. McKenzie, 90, of Brighton Township, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 while under the care of the staff at Friendship Ridge. He was born July 17, 1923 in Shaft, MD, son of the late William McKee McKenzie and Bessie Agnes (Munsie) McKenzie. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. John retired from the Coke By-Products Department, Aliquippa Works of Jones and Laughlin Steel. He had also been previously employed with Koppers. In his leisure, he enjoyed gardening, was quite the handyman, and a ham radio operator.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife Hazel in 2008; his brother: Franklin “Sonny” McKee McKenzie; and nephew: Randy Collins (husband of Barbara Collins).
John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law: Olin Harvey (Adelia) McKenzie, Frostburg, MD; two sisters: Kathleen Burkholder, Boardman, OH; Marian Brown, Frostburg, MD; his nephew: Robert Collins and wife Karen, Dayton, OH; niece: Barbara Collins, Ocala, FL; and their families. John was much like a father and grandfather to their families; and they were blessed to serve as caregivers for him. Also surviving are numerous additional loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12:30 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (GPS 848 Sunflower Road, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum).
