

Mary Zella Clayton, age 98, passed away on April 25, 2026 surrounded by her family with hymns and prayers. Born on November 25, 1927, Mary was raised in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, and attended New Brighton High School. She was the daughter of Howard and Zella West.
Mary’s life reflected steady devotion and deep faith, expressed both in the quiet constancy of her daily care for others and in the thoughtful wisdom she shared with those around her. She carried compassion with grace, and her warm, humorous spirit could brighten even ordinary moments—an enduring gift to family and friends alike.
She worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, yet when asked where her heart truly rested, Mary would say it was in being a devoted mother and homemaker. In the love she gave and the home she kept, she built a legacy of care that will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
Mary was married to the late William F. Clayton II for over 50 years, a bond marked by enduring commitment and shared life. She was the mother of William F. Clayton III (Linda), Barbara L. Clayton, and Sherrie Lou Carlson, her "adopted daughter". She is also survived by 5 grandchildren Jaime, Amanda Joy, Jessi, Tammy, and Christopher. 15 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters Hazelmae Hill, Mildred Jean Schwartz and brother Edward West.
In her personal life, Mary found joy in reading, playing cards, and truly living life—especially when it meant spending time with friends and family . Her presence was a comfort, her counsel was valued, and her affection was deeply felt by those fortunate enough to know her.
Mary was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and a member of The First United Methodist Church in New Brighton, where her faithful nature and compassionate heart found meaningful community. She will be remembered as beloved, wise, and gracious, with a humor that lingered long after conversations ended.
