Born on March 8, 1957, in Tonawanda, NY, Peter moved with his family to Moon Township, PA, in 1963. He was active in youth fellowship at Sharon Presbyterian Church and graduated from Moon High School in 1975. As a young man, he worked as a caddy at Montour Country Club and later as a valet, jobs that instilled in him a strong work ethic.
In January 1976, Peter proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he faithfully served for 18 and a half years before retiring on May 31, 1994. His career included service as a Communications Computer Systems Operations Craftsman, an Air Transportation Journeyman, and an Air Force Recruiter, where he met his wife Laurie. He served from August 2, 1990, to May 31, 1994, in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Throughout his distinguished career, Peter was stationed in Germany, California, Texas, NORAD in Colorado, New Kensington, PA, and the Pentagon.
After retiring from the Air Force, Peter began a second career in information technology, working for Gannett and later moving to Tegna in 2019. He retired in 2022 as a Lead Analyst in Security and Compliance.
In December 1990, Peter and his family relocated to Northern Virginia, where he dedicated more than 15 years to coaching youth bowling at AMF Dale City. In 2018, Peter and Laurie settled in New Brighton, PA, to be closer to family. The following year, in June 2019, he was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a battle he faced with strength, resilience, and hope.
Peter had a lifelong love of fishing, computers, and travel. Whether casting a line, tinkering with technology, or exploring new places, he embraced life with curiosity and joy.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Laurie (Mahan) Haskins of New Brighton, PA; daughters Kristina (Constance) Haskins of Colonial Beach, VA, and Rebecca (Ashton) Snodgrass of Beaver Falls, PA; sisters Patricia (Haskins) Brunette and Cynthia (Haskins) Roberts, both of Moon Township, PA; brother-in-law Albert Zalucky Sr. of Aliquippa, PA; sister-in-law Kelly (Aulerich) Mahan of Port St. Lucie, FL; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Joyce (Hoy) Haskins; sister Gail (Haskins) Zalucky; parents-in-law Donald and Priscilla (Plenderleith) Mahan; and brother-in-law Donald Mahan.
In honor of Peter’s deep commitment to advancing medical research, he selflessly donated his lungs and heart for Pulmonary Fibrosis studies, hoping to contribute to a cure for future generations. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease in Pittsburgh, where Peter actively participated in four clinical trials.
Peter will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, service to his country, devotion to his family, and the countless lives he touched with kindness and humor.
